To Heaven and Back Again: The Fate of the World

Many people don’t want to talk about the Book of Revelation. They ask, “How could a loving God pour out wrath upon people?” If you read the Old Testament, you will find out why.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness… (2 Timothy 3:16 AKJV)

Paul is instructing his new young leader about scripture found in the Old Testament. When we follow Paul’s advice, it is easy to see a decided trend in the stories of God’s people. Our Father would let them continue in sin for a certain period of time. Then, consequences would come - sometimes hundreds of years later. Several verses in the New Testament seem to contradict this aspect of God. Let’s look at one of those very closely:

However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness. (Romans 4:5 NIV)

At first glance this seems to say that we do not need to “work” for God. We must consider the topic Paul is addressing: the Jewish people wanted to continue working for their righteousness as they did under the Law of Moses.

For the promise to Abraham or his posterity, that he should inherit the world, did not come through [observing the commands of] the Law but through the righteousness of faith. (Romans 4:13)

The Greek word dikaiosynē is translated righteousness. It means in a state acceptable to God. Before Jesus, only God’s people could be in a right relationship with God through the yearly sacrifice of an animal. Without that sacrifice, they would go to Hell instead of Heaven.

The eternal destination of each person was the singular curse of the Law which we are redeemed from when we take Jesus as Lord. It is this state of righteousness that is referred to when it says through Jesus we are righteous. When you see statements about our “righteousness,” look at the entire chapter or perhaps the two surrounding it and you will see that the topic is our eternal salvation.

The wrath of God is coming because of sin. The New Testament also addresses the sin that is in the lives of Christians.

Do you not know that if you continually surrender yourselves to anyone to do his will, you are the slaves of him whom you obey, whether that be to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience which leads to righteousness (right doing and right standing with God)? (Romans 6:16 AMPC)

Satan is the author of sin. When we sin we are surrendering to Him. This is one of many scriptures in the New Testament, after Jesus left the earth, that urges us to leave sin behind because it gives Satan access to us in this life. Our sin may not cause us to lose our righteousness (right standing) with God as His child, so we may still go to Heaven, but it can give the enemy access to us. Our Lord told us that if we really love Him we will do what He tells us to do.

"If you love me, keep my commands.” (John 14:15)

If we don’t learn God’s ways, how will we know what the Lord is commanding us to do? God’s people, the Hebrews in the Old Testament, didn’t stop being God’s people when they disobeyed Him. When they refused to remove sin from their lives, God turned them over to their enemies until they repented (turned from that sin).

God will be placing the world in Satan’s hands during the time of the seals and trumpets. This is to give us an opportunity to repent. When that doesn’t happen, then He will pour out His wrath.

And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvelous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God... And one of the four beasts gave to the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who lives for ever and ever. (Revelation 12:1 & 7)

1st Vial

So the first [angel] went and emptied his bowl on the earth, and foul and painful ulcers (sores) came on the people who were marked with the stamp of the beast and who did homage to his image. (Revelation 16:2 AMPC)

The first plague that will be released will come solely upon those who received the mark of the beast AND worshiped him. The Greek word kakos translated “foul” or “noisome” in the King James Version can mean, “distressing, whether to mind or to body,” which is a good description of what it could be like to have painful sores appear on your body. This wording is also used to describe the sores upon Job and the plague that was released against Egypt.

2nd Vial

The second [angel] emptied his bowl into the sea, and it turned into blood like that of a corpse [thick, corrupt, ill-smelling, and disgusting], and every living thing that was in the sea perished. (Revelation 16:3 AMPC)

The next vial will release something that will affect the entire planet. Fishing is a big industry that provides a lot of food for the world. With the prior seals and trumpets causing the skies to darken, when the oceans are killed, food will now be hard to come by.

Turning water into blood and sores upon the body were two of the plagues that came against Egypt. Will we see more of Egypt’s plagues in the remaining wrath?

3rd Vial

Then the third [angel] emptied out his bowl into the rivers and the springs of water, and they turned into (became) blood. (Revelation 16:4 AMPC)

Now all the water has been poisoned! Not only will food be scarce, but water as well.

And I heard the angel of the waters say, “You are righteous, O Lord, which are, and were, and shall be, because you have judged thus. For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and you have given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.” And I heard another out of the altar say,” Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are your judgments. (Revelation 16:5-7)

Declarations from angels make it clear as to why water has been turned into blood. This is a judgment from Heaven, blood for blood. The payment for all the lives of God’s holy people which have been taken has now come due and the punishment is given for the blood spilled.

4th Vial

Then the fourth [angel] emptied out his bowl upon the sun, and it was permitted to burn (scorch) humanity with [fierce, glowing] heat (fire). People were severely burned (scorched) by the fiery heat, and they reviled and blasphemed the name of God, Who has control of these plagues, and they did not repent of their sins [felt no regret, contrition, and compunction for their waywardness, refusing to amend their ways] to give Him glory. (Revelation 16:8-9 AMPC)

The UV rays from the sun not only burns the skin but creates “heat.” Having a sunburn is doubly painful when it is hot out! Instead of turning to God for help, they follow the Antichrist and speak against God. Let’s apply science to what we have seen happen thus far to discern what may be taking place:

● First Trumpet: “hail, fire, mingled with blood” hits the Earth.

● all the grass and ⅓ of the trees were burned up.

○ Fire creates pollution

○ Pollution impacts the ozone layer around the Earth which protects us from UV rays.

● Second Trumpet: a huge meteor the size of a mountain will strike the ocean

○ Chains of Tsunamis and crustal shifting

● Third Trumpet: ⅓ of all rivers and springs poisoned

○ heat from the shock wave of the entering asteroid and reprocessing of the air close to the impact produces nitric and nitrous acids over the next few months to one year

According to Nick Strobel from the Astronomy Department at Bakersfield College, here is what will occur if a meteorite lands in the sea:

● N2 + O2 ‚> NO

(molecular nitrogen combined with molecular oxygen produces nitrogen monoxide)

● 2NO + O2 ‚> 2NO2

(two nitrogen monoxide molecules combined with one oxygen molecule produces two nitrogen dioxide molecules)

● NO2 is converted to nitric and nitrous acids when it is mixed with water.

This means that acid rain is created. After this happens:

● 4th Trumpet: “The ozone layer will be destroyed by O3 reacting with NO… All of the dust in the air from the impact and soot from the fires will block the sun,” Nick’s website says.

When plant photosynthesis stops and the food chain collapses. After a cooling period, it is followed by a much more prolonged period of increased temperature due to a large increase in the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is increased because of the increase of the carbon dioxide and water vapor in the air. The carbon dioxide level rises because the plants are burned and most of the plankton are wiped out.

4th Vial: With less of an ozone layer, and fewer plants to produce oxygen, the UV rays will cause quick burning along with the heated atmosphere.

● The 4th Vial will be poured out around a year after the meteorite strikes the Earth.

● First clouds drop the temperature

● Next acid rain poisons the water

● Finally, a year or so later, the “greenhouse effect”

The Apostle John correctly prophesied the effects of a meteorite striking the Earth almost 2,000 years ago!

Because we can say that the Second Trumpet is about a year before this vial, we can now adjust our Tribulation Timeline.

5th Vial

Then the fifth [angel] emptied his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom was [plunged] in darkness; and people gnawed their tongues for the torment [of their excruciating distress and severe pain] (Revelation 16:10 AMPC)

With all the debris in the atmosphere from the earthquakes, smoke from the bottomless pit and the meteorite, is there any wonder that the sky is completely blocked out? What is the world’s response to God’s wrath?

And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their anguish and their ulcers (sores), and they did not deplore their wicked deeds or repent [for what they had done]. (Revelation 16:11)

As we have seen, there may be a scientific reason behind what is happening. From the prior chapters, we know the Antichrist will be blaspheming God and those in Heaven. It looks like he will be convincing the world to do the same.

6th Vial

Then the sixth [angel] emptied his bowl on the mighty river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to make ready a road for [the coming of] the kings of the east (from the rising sun). (Revelation 16:12)

The Euphrates is the longest river in southwest Asia. A tectonic plate runs under this river, so shifting of the earth’s crust from the meteorite could cause the river to dry up. The river to the east of Israel is drained. China has the largest army in the world and relies heavily upon water, both in the sea and on land for rice. The drying up of this river will clear the way for an army to march, possibly from China in search of water and food.

And I saw three loathsome spirits like frogs, [leaping] from the mouth of the dragon and from the mouth of the beast and from the mouth of the false prophet. For really they are the spirits of demons that perform signs (wonders, miracles). And they go forth to the rulers and leaders all over the world, to gather them together for war on the great day of God the Almighty. (Revelation 16:13-14)

Satan gathers the marshals of his army, sending out his demonic forces to influence the nations of the world.

Behold, I am going to come like a thief! Blessed (happy, to be envied) is he who stays awake (alert) and who guards his clothes, so that he may not be naked and [have the shame of being] seen exposed! (Revelation 16:165AMPC)

The Lord gives a warning, with words that seem very familiar. Locating where they are spoken in the Bible will reveal who He is speaking to:

Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you. You have a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. (Revelation 3:3-4 AKJV)

This was addressed to the “church at Sardis.” We will discuss the churches next, for now, it is enough to know that “if you will not watch, I (Jesus) will come upon you as a thief.” By looking at these teachings you are becoming ready to “watch” so that this day will not come upon you this way!

And they gathered them together at the place which in Hebrew is called Armageddon. (Revelation 16:16)

Where exactly their forces will gather is still a great debate. Armageddon is translated from Greek and the most common belief is that it means: Har-Magedon or the hill at Magedon, a place of many bloody battles in Israel. Unfortunately this is the only place in the whole Bible where this word appears. For that reason, this may be metaphoric, merely saying that the enemies are gathering for a great bloody battle against God’s nation.

7th Vial

And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. And there were voices, and thunders, and lightning; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were on the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. (Revelation 16:17-18)

Just as with the seals and trumpets, the seventh angel from Heaven brings “voices, and thunders, and lighting and an earthquake.” With each set of events, the earthquake seems to increase, this time being the biggest of all.

And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give to her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. (Revelation 16:19-20)

The Lord is revealing that the time for destruction has come. What city Babylon is, cannot be 100% identified but it could be either Rome or New York City. The destruction continues in the next verse:

And there fell on men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great. (Revelation 16:21)

The hail that comes with this vial weighs about 50-60 pounds. Still this did not convince them to repent from their way, they railed at God more. In the next few chapters, we get a full description of Babylon. For now we will skip ahead and know that following the destruction of Babylon and the hail our Lord and his army come to conquer Satan:

And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he does judge and make war. (Revelation 19:11)

I was in the middle of writing about the wrath of God when the Lord gave me a message for everyone who would read this. I was visiting with Him in the Secret Place, a dimension that exists at the Throne of God where we can interact with Him as Abba, Jesus as our Bridegroom and even the Holy Spirit as our Friend. The Lord said, “Tell them about the Secret Place and Heavenly Jerusalem, Father has prepared a place for them!”

God is organized, not chaotic, and so is Heaven. Our place there will be determined by what happens here on Earth. We cannot earn our Salvation: it is by grace, through faith in Jesus that we are saved, not by works. However, the scripture also tells us:

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. (James 2:26)

But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust does corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal… (Matthew 6:20)

When we know by faith that we have an eternal destination, we should be preparing for it now. We can “lay up… treasures in Heaven” meaning our actions here will have an eternal benefit.

When we become part of the Kingdom of Heaven should follow the example of our Lord. At the age of 12 He was “about His Father’s business.” (Luke 4:29) First we must learn God’s ways and be willing to follow them!
