4 Steps to Walk into Your Destiny

Last night I was crying out to the Lord… literally crying. The path to my destiny has been so long, so hard, I felt like I was hanging on by my fingernail. This was when the Holy Spirit began to show me four distinct steps that lead to our destiny… well, my destiny. I believe that this is God’s usual path for us and I hope that by sharing what I have learned, it will help you walk into your destiny quicker.

Step 1 - God Reveals Your Destiny

There are books in Heaven that were written before time began about the perfect destiny God has for us. In the free book, Roadmap to Heaven, God gives us 5 steps to finding our destiny, so I won’t go into that here. (CLICK HERE for that book) Until you read that book and see it in the scriptures, you will just have to take my word on it: there are books and they don’t remove our free will - it is up to us whether or not we obtain and walk in that destiny.

Short-Cut
How do we get God to reveal our destiny? By seeking Him and His will, not our own. For me it happened this way:

I had walked away from God for many years because of a personal tragedy. When I was pregnant with my first child, I decided I wanted my child to be raised with the knowledge that there was a God.

Sitting quietly on the bed, I said, “God, I know I was wrong. I am so sorry for all the horrible things I said about You and Jesus. Please forgive me. I want to know who You are. And if there is anything I can do for You, anyway I can be of use to You after all I have done, please, just let me know.”

After turning my back on Him for so long, I didn’t think there was much He could use me for, but I was willing. No matter how small, I would do whatever He asked.

This is the key. We have to be willing to put what we think we know, what we think we want, aside.

  • Are you willing to serve others?
  • To be a janitor at a church?
  • Or are you sure your destiny is to be the star attraction?

If you want God to reveal your destiny, put yourself aside. Humble yourself: it isn’t about you. What does God need you for?

Often the revelation of your destiny will come in a vision or a dream. It will be something that you cannot obtain on your own. For me, I heard God’s audible, powerful, voice. However this revelation comes, it should set you on the path toward your destiny.

Step 2 - Understanding Your Destiny

God says,
“I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, 'My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.'... (Isaiah 46:10)

When God speaks to us of our destiny, it isn’t a step-by-step instruction manual that He downloads to us. He shows us one of the final pages in our book to show us where we will wind up.
It is the glory of God to conceal a thing, but the honor of kings is to search out a matter. (Proverbs 25:2)
Even having this glimpse of what will be the pinnacle of our success doesn’t mean we will understand it. Knowing our destiny and understanding it are two very different things. This time of struggle to understand and find what God is talking about is often referred to as a “wilderness” experience. It is a time of trials and test as we are forged into the strong tool God needs us to be.

For me it looked like this:

For many years I searched for what I heard God say. Each time I  thought I had it, things would fall apart. More times than I like to remember, it felt like I was hanging on by my fingertips… crying out to God, “Where have I gone wrong?”

Short-Cut

It isn’t about the destination. It is about learning to trust in God and lean on Him. God began revealing how my destiny would unfold when I stopped looking for my destiny and drew close to Him.
But seek (aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides. So do not worry or be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have worries and anxieties of its own. Sufficient for each day is its own trouble. (Matthew 6:33-34)
When we seek God, try to understand the ways of His kingdom, then we will have an easier time understanding what He wants us to do. We have an enemy who will try to distract, deceive, and convince us that we are disqualified from our destiny. The only way to combat this is to learn about God and His ways through His word. The more time we give to studying about Him, the faster we will understand what our destiny is.

Step 3 - Walking Towards Your Destiny

Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep His commands. He humbled you... to teach you that man does not live by bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. (Deut 8:2-3)
Knowing where you are going, doesn’t mean you will get there overnight. The path to our destiny is filled with tests and trials. The bigger our destiny, the harder the trial and sometimes the longer we remain in the wilderness.

Consider it wholly joyful, my brethren, whenever you are enveloped in or encounter trials of any sort or fall into various temptations. Be assured and understand that the trial and proving of your faith bring out endurance and steadfastness and patience.
But let endurance and steadfastness and patience have full play and do a thorough work, so that you may be [people] perfectly and fully developed [with no defects], lacking in nothing. (James 1:2-4)
On a mountain top the wind blows hard - Satan sees us standing there and attacks us. We need to be strong in our faith to endure what comes when we are walking in our destiny. I’ve heard it said that for every year we will be standing on the top of the mountain of our destiny, we endure a year of testing.  I’m not sure this is always the case, there seems to be some correlation, but it isn’t consistent:

Moses
Was in the desert tending sheep for 40 years. He led God’s people through the desert for 40 years.

David
Anointed and proclaimed to be as a teenager who was still tending sheep - most think he was between the ages of 12-16. David became King at 30. He reigned for 40 years.

I think it is safe to say that each person is unique, their destiny is unique, so is the time it takes to arrive on the mountain top of our destiny.

Short-Cut

The best way to move quickly toward your destiny is to become determined not to move one step forward without hearing from Him first. Make sure you hear clearly and distinctly. Not only that, stop running 10 steps ahead every time He points you in a direction. Often God says go this way, but it is only for a brief moment: we aren’t supposed to set up camp or start a business.
For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. (Romans 8:14)
We must be led by the Spirit. If you aren’t hearing anything, don’t charge off in what you think is the right direction. Wait until you are very clear that this is the next step. This will keep you from taking a bunch of rabbit trails that lead nowhere and take up tons of your time.

You might think it is easier once you understand fully what your destiny is and are actively walking toward it. In some ways it is. However, last night was one of those nights:

I cried out to the Holy Spirit saying, “I know I’ve said this over and over… but you are my Comforter - who else can I go to? The things you said I will do… they are so very big and yet, there is still so much I am lacking:

My car is 13 years old, and thank you that it gets me where I need to go… but where is the provision for all you’ve shown me? Where is the shalom of God? I’m not walking free from all the effects of sin, I still need some healing?

Holy Spirit, it is just hard to hang on to the promises God has spoken over me….”

This was my cry to Him. When I got silent, He spoke, “Don’t you see, your healing has begun and will continue….”

He pointed out that I was laying on my side without any support for my jaw. I was diagnosed with TMJ which came because I was gnashing and grinding my teeth at night. Several years ago, God had sent an angel to keep me from inflicting more damage in the night when I asked, but damage had been done. My ear would have sharp pains as my jaw moved out of place when I laid on my side without supporting it.

There was still some minor pressure in my ear, but 95% of the pain was gone! God had healed me and I hadn’t even recognized it! I praised and thanked God for His faithfulness.

This is a key to staying strong as you head toward your destiny: Rejoice in  every victory! My entire body wasn’t fully healed, but it is on it’s way! Perhaps there is a healing in your life. I pray the Holy Spirit will reveal it!

Step 4 - Staying in Your Destiny

Once you come into your destiny, how do you remain on the mountain top with strong winds blowing against you? There are a few things that God brought to my attention that may make it harder to stand:
  • Avoid a puffed-up soul.
  • Be ready to receive correction.

Puffed-up Soul

There are many things that can cause our soul to begin to dominate our spirit. This is one of the biggest dangers for mature Christians. My next article will talk about this in depth. You can join us for our online meeting at 1 PM on Tuesdays where we will discuss that. (CLICK HERE for more info)

Receiving Correction

For the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastises everyone He receives as a son… (Hebrews 12:6)

Correction can come from any place at anytime. I’ve had correction come from my children and baby Christians. Being quick to accept correction and repenting will help you to remain in the place God has for you.

I pray that God will reveal your destiny to you as you seek Him, that He will guide you to full understanding of it, and that He will make the high places low and make the crooked places straight so that He can quickly bring you to all He has designed and created you for!

Many people think of boot camp as a place you train for combat. Any veteran will tell you that basic training is about three things:
  • Knowing what weapons are available
  • Learning how to use those weapons
  • Receiving orders and following them
Believer’s Boot Camp series is a collection of books which teach us how to hear more clearly from God with the goal to ready ourselves for a face-to-face meeting with our Lord, Jesus. The series reveals the “weapons and tools” God has given us and how to use them, so we can bring God’s kingdom to Earth. Each book in the series focuses on a single topic to clearly define one tool or weapon from our Heavenly Father.

The series uses the Word of God to reveal all that He has given us through Jesus. The Bible is our instruction manual and the Holy Spirit is our guide to understanding it.

Volume 1: Why Doesn't God Speak to Me?

Eager hearts cry out, hoping for a single word to confirm that He hears us. Yet, many times the only sound is silence. Over the years I have heard several reasons why God speaks to some and not to others. One night, as I tossed and turned, I brought each of these reasons before the Lord, stating why each of them did not line up with who I thought He was.

Words rose from my soul, pleading for Him to reveal why He has remained silent when a single word from Him would mean so much to so many. For the next few hours, God used things I learned about years ago and things I had just discovered to show why He talks to some and why He doesn’t, and in demonstrative ways.

In His grace, He also showed me how people could hear more from Him. Basic instructions on how to hear more from God and how to be led by Him are included in this book. Thank you for taking time to consider the answers I received and share with you now.

Keys to Authority for Every Believer

There is untapped power that is easy for every Christian to access in the form of authority. The keys to this authority will unlock weapons we can use to free ourselves from the attacks of the enemy. We must be intimately aware of the bounds and limitations of our weapon if they are to be used effectively.

Find out about your authority:
  • Why you need it.
  • Where it comes from.
  • What you can do with it.
  • How to get more.
