Leviathan - Who, How, What

VIDEO: Leviathan

You crushed the heads of Leviathan; You gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness. You split open springs and brooks; You dried up ever-flowing streams. (Psalms 74:14-15 ESV) 

This is a psalm recounting how God delivered His people from Egypt after they cried out for deliverance. The chronological order of events helps us to identify the armies of Egypt as Leviathan because the next item describes the time after Pharoah’s defeat when God brought water from the rocks in the wilderness.  

Thanks to this description we know that the metaphorical meaning of Leviathan is an army. In the spiritual realm, Satan’s network, hovering over the Earth, is called by the same name. He is described by God who speaks with Job:  

Can you draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which you let down? Can you put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn? Will he make many supplications to you? will he speak soft words to you? Will he make a covenant with you? will you take him for a servant for ever? (Job 41:1-4 AKJV) 

Because an animal cannot speak nor make a covenant with us, we know this is a metaphorical reference. After a lengthy description of this beast, we see whom he is compared to: 

None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before Me? (Job 41:10 AKJV) 

God is telling Job that no one is able to stand before Leviathan, and none dare attack him. God then compares the beast to Himself. Since God is a spirit, we can assume that Leviathan is also a spirit being. Some assume Satan and his army are now on Earth because of a statement made by the Lord: 

And He said to them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from Heaven. (Luke 10:18 AKJV) 

To fully understand this, we need to look at other meanings of the Greek words involved: 

• Satan: Literally means adversary, one who opposes a work being done, not just Lucifer. 
• Fall: To descend from a higher place to a lower place. 
• Lightning: The light of a lamp, used in Revelation 4:5, 8:5, 11:18 to describe power coming from God’s Throne. 

Looking at the full definition of these words we see that this verse is about Satan’s power being overcome through the power released in Heaven. Jesus was explaining to His disciples why demons were subject to His name: they were overcome from God’s throne where the CoH are located until the Lord casts him out during the Tribulation. 

And there was war in Heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in Heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceives the whole world: he was cast out into the Earth, and his angels were cast out with him. (Revelation 12:7-9 AKJV) 

Until the Tribulation begins, Satan is still in the Heavens. When we say an attack of “Leviathan,” we are saying that it is a coordinated attack by the armies of Satan. 

Pride Opens the Door  

Satan is the leader of the rebellion against God and the one who leads Leviathan, so let’s take a closer look at him. The Bible says Satan was created as a perfect being until the sin of pride led him astray. 

Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty, you have corrupted your wisdom by reason of your brightness: I will cast you to the ground, I will lay you before kings, that they may behold you. (Ezekiel 28:17 AKJV) 

Verses 13–16 describe a being that could be none other than Satan. “Your heart was lifted up” refers to pride that caused him to fall. He was the first heavenly host to fall and was followed by his rebellious army of angels. Pride is often the thing that gives Satan access to us. According to Webster’s dictionary, pride is: 

...an inordinate self-esteem (thinking too much of ourselves); an unreasonable conceit of one’s own superiority in talents, beauty, wealth, accomplishments, rank or elevation in office, which manifests itself in lofty airs, distance, reserve, and often in contempt of others. 

Leviathan can use those who have a stronghold of pride. Many people under his influence may be blinded to the fact that they are in Leviathan’s grip. 

He beholds all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride. (Job 41:34 AKJV) 

In this verse, God is describing Leviathan to Job. If you respond to situations in a prideful way, then Leviathan may be allowed to take root in your life as a stronghold is developed. Eventually, Satan may become your king and rule over your life. 

As children of God, pride is something we must always guard against. There are actions that may bring an attack of Leviathan into our lives. Most are connected to pride because they reduce the reputation of others or increase our reputation. 

Prideful Sins 

• Gossiping: 
• When we want to be the first to tell others about a negative factor about someone else, we are looking to lift ourselves up in their eyes and put someone else down. That is pride ruling our hearts. 
• Slander or boasting: 
• Slander is lies or exaggerations about someone to make them look bad. We do this to make someone else look worse while making ourselves look better in the process. 
• Boasting is the opposite of slander: it is lies or exaggeration about our goodness. 
• Judgment with accusations: 
• Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment, you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure, you use it will be measured to you. (Matthew 7:1-2 ESV) 
• We should be gracious towards others. When we judge others and make accusations against them, often it is to reduce their reputation. Because we are the ones giving the accusations, our reputation would then be increased. 
• Idolatry, rituals, traditions, or cultural practices: 
• …thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do. (Mark 7:13 ESV) 
• Placing anything above God, even godly desires, makes that item or action an idol. 
• When you put faith and confidence in a ritual action or tradition, then you are trusting in yourself instead of God, placing your actions above Him. 
• Rebellion or dishonoring leaders: 
• When we rebel, we place our desires above what has been established. We consider our desires more important, which is pride in what we want. 
• Rebellion often occurs because we think a leader is wrong. 
• Moreover, if your brother shall trespass against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone: if he shall hear you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear you, then take with you one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it to the church: but if he neglects to hear the church, let him be to you as a heathen man and a publican. (Matthew 18:15-17 AKJV) 
• Instead of addressing it with the person as the Bible tells us to, or praying for them while humbly submitting to them, we act against them. This is lifting ourselves up, placing us above the leader. 
• We can rebel against God by willfully and continually sinning. 
• The love of money 
• No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. (Matthew 6:24 ESV) 
• For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. (1 Timothy 6:10 ESV) 
• Money elevates our reputation which connects it to pride. 

These are the primary sins that may give Leviathan access to you, but how they manifest may vary from person to person. When we continually operate in these sins, a stronghold may develop allowing the enemy to gain a foothold in our lives. 

Spotting Pride 

We cannot remove Leviathan if we have given him access to us through pride, which can often be hard to recognize in ourselves. The sin of pride can be revealed by examining our attitudes: 

Attitudes Towards Others 

• Condescending, Critical, and Condemning Attitudes or Thoughts: We are to esteem others more highly than ourselves. If you tend to look down on others and think that you are “better” than they are, this is pride. The heart of a “critic or accuser” is an inner surety that we know better than others. This is not humble or gracious. 
• Dishonor of Authority: We are to honor those who are anointed by God and placed in positions of leadership, even if they are NOT under Holy Spirit’s control; like David’s attitude towards Saul. Attitudes of dishonor towards leaders often indicate pride in the heart. 
• Taking Offense Easily: When we are easily offended it is often linked to pride and is the opposite of being humble. As Christians we are supposed to be hard to offend (James 1:19, Ecclesiastes 7:9). This includes being offended because of the way we feel we are treated or spoken to due to gender or race. Satan loves to stir up strife because of offense using these factors. 
• Independent Attitude: We are to be united within the body of Christ, although we may all have different functions. If we ever feel like we need to be “out there alone, so we can just do our own thing,” or that “no one else will understand,” then this is not from God. An independent attitude can actually be a spirit of rebellion against authority in disguise. 

Attitudes Towards Ourselves:  

• Self-Glory: As children of God, we should seek to glorify God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. If we feel like we are not getting the credit we deserve, or we are not being promoted enough, then we are seeking our own glory. 
• Lack of Time in His Presence: Oftentimes, this is a sign that temptation to pride has come. It indicates a possibility that we have become self-sufficient and self-ruled. Our actions show that we are no longer dependent upon the flow from His Presence and Counsel. This is dangerous in that it produces a mindset of self-rule, and subsequently asks God to bless and serve what man himself has initiated. 
• Boasting Over Revelations: Most often this is not an outward action but an inward attitude. We can slip into this behavior in two ways when we feel we receive something from God: 
• We focus on what we have received and pour all our energy into that instead of looking to God, learning His ways, and walking in them. 
• Desiring to be Served: Jesus did not come to be served but to serve. If we want to be seen as a leader or be a leader who is recognized for what we have accomplished, this is for our own glory and not God’s. 
• Desiring Reputation: Jesus was a man of no reputation as were His disciples. If we have inner desires to be esteemed by others, we need to be watchful. Pride could be lurking. This is often disguised as focusing on attaining a certain “position.” 

The only way we can effectively avoid these traps of Leviathan is to live in humility. 

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up. (James 4:10 AKJV) 

Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you… (1 Peter 5:5-6 ESV) 

Humbling ourselves is something we can choose to do. Clothes are items we have to put on every day. As you begin focusing on humility, it may not happen automatically, but the fruit of the Spirit will grow if we refuse to give pride a place. 

How Leviathan Attacks 

Recognizing an attack of this kind will help us know how to respond so it can be removed. Just like the sea monster he is compared to, Leviathan will attack with its mouth and tail. The tactics related to these can help identify his activity in our life. 

Mouth Attacks 

The mouth has several aspects: The tongue, which is words, and the teeth which are wisdom. Leviathan attacks may use both of these items. 

1. With the Tongue 

And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood. (Revelation 12:15 AKJV) 

Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out. (Job 41:19 AKJV) 

Leviathan wants you to be destroyed and carried away with what is being said. In the mouth, teeth represent wisdom. Often, accusations are spewed forth and disguised with wisdom. His goal is to carry your friends and those who labor with you in the ministry away with lies and deceptions as he slanders your character. 

2. Creating Miscommunication 

Who is he that hides counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not. (Job 42:3 AKJV) 

God has this lengthy discussion with Job in chapter 41, where Leviathan is revealed. Job needed to confess that counsel and true understanding and/or wisdom were kept from him after God spoke personally to him. 

Have you ever been at work or in a relationship where what you say is taken the wrong way? Sometimes even the words you actually say are not always heard. You may say blue, but they hear red. When you both think you know what was said, this can cause a big problem. It can occur between friends, in marriages, in ministry, and even between parents and children. 

This spirit will confuse what you hear and what others hear you say. Leviathan will also seek to hide true revelation and confuse the true meaning of the Word of God. Its goal is to prevent wisdom from coming to us or from us. If confusion surrounds you, then you may want to look at some of the sins which open the door to an attack of Leviathan. 

Tail Attacks 

Metaphorically speaking, the tail represents lies or tales we tell. The tail of Leviathan will sweep through an area often wreaking havoc as it leaves. There are two main aspects of tales we can connect to Satan and his army. 

1. Sowing Discord 

All day long they twist my words and trouble my affairs; all their thoughts are against me for evil and my hurt. (Psalms 56:5 AMPC) 

David was God’s king. Those who opposed him were aligned with Satan and his army. They came against God’s anointed by twisting his words to “trouble” his affairs which is causing strife, conflict, and hostility. As mentioned earlier, this Leviathan spirit will distort your words, resulting in miscommunication between people to stir up strife. 

When Leviathan has a stronghold in someone, they may try to stir up strife by speaking to others instead of directly addressing the issue. The words of those being attacked will be twisted and misapplied by those operating with Leviathan. 

2. Suggesting Lies 

In the Garden of Eden, Satan said to Eve: 

…And he said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’ ” (Genesis 3:1 ESV) 

The purpose of this insinuation on the part of Satan was to get Eve to begin to question what God said. Eve then replied: 

But of the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die. (Genesis 3:3 AKJV) 

Satan began by suggesting a lie, then Eve continued in this trend by relating God’s instructions inaccurately. God only said not to eat of the fruit, He never said not to touch it. Could Eve have touched the fruit and seen that it was good, and when she didn’t die, also assumed she wouldn’t die from eating it either? Leviathan still uses this tactic today; he loves to suggest that something is a lie or untrue. When we consider his lie, then there is an opportunity for misunderstanding to come in. We must know what the truth is and hold fast to it, as long as it is based in God’s word. 

Leviathan Strongholds 

Those working with a stronghold of Leviathan can be very friendly, making it difficult to identify them. The easiest ones to recognize are those who are very ritualistic. When they pray, they are compelled to perform certain actions. A couple of examples include: 

• The need to take off their shoes before entering “holy ground.” 
• Consistently wearing one specific item of clothing like a scarf. 
• Going to one specific place to pray. 

Anytime that you think you must do something every time you enter into God’s presence or receive from Him, this is a manifestation of pride. Jesus said the highest form of faith was from the soldier who knew He could pray for a child in another city and his servant would be healed. Jesus also never did the same action twice when healing people. Unless the Holy Spirit gives us a special direction to do something, it is only our words of faith that are ever needed. 

The Devil loves to imitate God. When Leviathan has a place in someone’s life, Satan may empower them: 

• To operate in a counterfeit Holy Spirit 
• You may feel a “presence” when they are speaking with you or praying for you. 
• To operate in miracles, word of knowledge, prophecy, and word of wisdom 
• These are vague or from what they know instead of divinely inspired. 
• To see visions 
• These are from their own mind or the enemy. 

God isn’t the only One who can move in spiritual ways; a person can be used by Leviathan instead of by the Holy Spirit. There may be anointed men and women of God who are actively pursuing God, but they are not listening to the right spirit. 

Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. You shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? (Matthew 7:15-16 AKJV) 

Trees are usually used to represent leaders or people in general. The Bible says we will know a tree by its fruit. Always look for the fruit of the Spirit in the lives of your leaders: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humbleness, and self-control. Pride is the opposite of being humble. 

Thorns are harsh or “prickly” words which attack others. These traits may indicate the presence of Leviathan. Additional warning signs to look out for are: 

• Their goal is to have people run to them instead of to Jesus for miracles, breakthroughs, and healings. 
• They are prideful and will always want you to acknowledge that THEY are the leader or should be in a higher place: 
• They like to be called by their title. 
• They will tell you they have prayed for you: 
• It draws attention to them instead of God. 
• There will be gaps in the fruit of the Spirit. 

Someone under the influence of these demons may seem spiritually gifted with dreams, visions, words of wisdom, or prophecy. They may even be labeled as a prophet or be a pastor of a church. You may be able to spot someone who is under Leviathan’s influence if: 

• It is their desire to be the solution with their prayers. 
• They claim to be the only one who is able to teach you something. 

Do you see the consistency in those two items? It is all about them: what they can do for you. Someone with a Leviathan stronghold doesn't like to promote others. They want a place in your life by saying what you want to hear. An open door to Leviathan can be created in your life when someone with a Leviathan stronghold: 

• Lays hands on you or prays over you. 
• Gives you a prophecy or “word.” 
• The advice may be according to God’s word but done with a wrong motive. 
• The “prophecy” is often from what they know or will contain a blessing that you may desire. In some cases, it will contain a curse as they attempt to influence you through fear. 
• Encourages you to seek them for prayer and advice instead of seeking God. 
• Following their advice will open the door to this spirit. 

Receiving prayer, guidance, words of wisdom, or prophecy from someone operating with an open door to Leviathan may hinder the flow of the anointing in people’s lives and keep them spiritually blinded by blocking their spiritual gifts. If you have come into wrong agreement, you will need to renounce their spiritual leadership or words spoken over you, as well as sever any soul ties. Generational Connections 

Generational curses are sins of our ancestors that Satan may use to move into our lives. A Leviathan curse can be established in many ways, including: 

• Dedication by ancestors for the family line, at birth, or later in life. 
• This includes dedications in the Catholic church because they place the Pope between us and the Lord. 
• Ancestors that have worshipped idols or other gods. 
• Catholics worship “saints” by making sacrifices to them in certain countries, praying to them, or lighting candles. 
• This is no different than how other gods are worshipped. 

When we have ancestors or parents who have made dedications to other gods, this creates a connection that Leviathan may use to attack us. If blood was spilled, then there is a blood covenant that will need to be renounced before we plead the blood of Jesus over it. Certain associations may open a door to, or reinforce, these types of generational curses. 

• Fellowshipping with leaders operating in pride. 
• You may be drawn to those who have an open door to Leviathan. 
• An instant or intense emotional connection may indicate an active generational curse. 
• Worshiping leaders as idols. 
• You or your ancestors may “over honor” pastors, prophets, evangelists, or apostles. 
• Giving offerings and gifts in order to receive a blessing. 
• You should be giving to God for what they bring, acknowledging God who is working through them. 
• Look to them for permission to buy a home, marry, or start a business. 
• God should be directing your life, you do not need man’s permission. 
• Friends, family, or co-workers with this spirit.  
• Are there sins such as gossiping which occur when you are together?  

We need to be sure to respond the right way to these demonically inspired connections with people being used for the devil’s purpose. We need to examine our lives and see if we opened the door to attacks by acting in agreement with these people by entertaining gossip. 

You cannot repeat the same behavior without opening the door once more, so you may want to discuss it with the other person involved or limit your access to this person in your life. If it is a co-worker or family member, ask the Holy Spirit which of these steps you need to take: 

• Ask the Holy Spirit to bind any spirit from speaking to you through them. 
• You are not “binding” Leviathan, only the spirit in operation in that person who is connected to Leviathan. 
• This will not work if you still have an open door. 
• Ask the Lord to remove that person from your life. 
• Do not be surprised if they no longer feel like talking to you or if they move away. 

If it is a spiritual leader, be careful of your actions. Never attack leaders who have gone astray from God’s ways. We must look at David’s example when dealing with those whom God may have anointed in the past but have lost their way. 

• Saul was anointed as king, but then possessed by demons (1 Samuel 10). 
• Saul was plagued by demons so David played the harp to help (1 Samuel 14). 
• David refused to attack God’s anointed even when Saul tried to kill him (1 Samuel 24). 

We should not attack those anointed by God or we may come under attack. Paul tells us how to respond when a Christian brother is found in error: 

Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. (Galatians 6:1 NKJV) 

It was the Sadducees and Pharisees that riled up a mob against Jesus. We should give corrections privately. “Gentleness” refers to a spirit of humility. This is the right way to bring correction. 

Symptoms of Attacks 

Sometimes we can spot a Leviathan attack by the symptoms associated with his presence. 

• Restlessness: having problems sleeping. For example, you may wake up at 3 am unable to sleep anymore. Demonic dreams may also occur. 
• Frustration: it makes you question everything in your life. 
• Inclination to rebel against authority: no leader is good enough. 
• Deep anger or hate: these are the opposite of love and God is love. Satan is the opposite of God. 
• The feeling of something coiled up inside you: waist, spine, pelvis, ankles. 
• Pressure at the front and back of the head: an indication of a blocked mind. 
• Sudden pressure between the temples or a migraine: meaning you may have come into agreement with something prideful. 
• Pressure on the eyes when reading a book may indicate that it has pride in it. 
• afterward, it may be difficult to read the Bible. 
• Pressure or issues with your ears: can indicate an influence of Leviathan. 
• Communication issues: Leviathan twists words or the truth. 
• Leviathan can wrap itself around your spiritual body. He may slow you down so it feels like you cannot get ahead in life, there are often delays in finances or finding the spouse the Lord has for you. 
• Inexplicable marks or scratches on your body appear after sleeping. 
• Being under so much pressure that you curse the day of your birth or wish for death. 

In addition to these symptoms, any demonic attack may have the characteristics of Leviathan. The difference between the two is the severity of the attack. If you have stirred up Leviathan by provoking him with unauthorized authority or something else, then the attack may come from many sides at once; several people will attack you in the same week or even the same day.  

Responding to Leviathan 

What should we do if we feel Leviathan is coming after us? 

Lay your hand on him; Remember the battle [with him]; you will not do such [an ill-advised thing] again! Behold, his [assailant’s] hope and expectation [of defeating Leviathan] is false... None is so fierce that dare stir him up… (Job 41:8-10 AMP) 

God warned Job that attacking Leviathan leads only to regret. Satan’s army is in Heaven and the Bible tells us who can take action there:  

The heavens, even the heavens, are the Lord’s; but the Earth He has given to the children of men. (Psalm 115:16 AKJV) 

We do not have authority in the Heavens; only the Lord does. If you challenge Leviathan in prayer, then you have wielded unauthorized authority because Satan’s army resides in the Heavens, over which humans have no power. We have only been given power on Earth. The half-brother of Jesus warned us to be careful how we deal with spiritual beings: 

Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.” (Jude 1:9 AKJV) 

When Moses died, Satan, the leader of the Leviathan army, tried to lay claim to Moses’ body. Instead of battling Satan, the angel said, “the Lord rebuke you” because he recognized that only the Lord has absolute authority over Leviathan and would destroy him at the appointed time. We need to put this verse in proper context to see the fullness of what is being discussed: 

Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. (Jude 1:8 KJV) 

The Greek word blasphēmeō translates as “speak evil,” but means to reproach, rail at, or revile. The word “dignities” is doxa in Greek, and it means that which belongs to God. The people who are attacking Satan wrongly are reproaching or coming against matters under God’s control. The next verse gives an example of how it should be handled; by calling upon the Lord. 

In that day the LORD with His sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and He shall slay the dragon that is in the sea. (Isaiah 27:1 KJV) 

Our Lord is the only One who can battle Leviathan. We need to cry out to Him to deliver us from Leviathan. 

Removing the Attack 

A revelation of sin in our life connected to Leviathan is usually the most effective way to break free of a Leviathan attack. This allows us to close the doors we have opened so the Lord can remove the attack. 

1. Confess your sins and those of your ancestors. 
2. Renounce covenants, dedications, or rituals that the Holy Spirit specifically reveals. 
3. Ask God to forgive you and anyone else involved. 
4. Break soul ties with ancestors or people you have been involved with. 
5. Plead the blood of Jesus over all your sins as well as those of your ancestors. 
6. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you guard your heart or inner-self against pride. 
7. Cry out to God to deliver you as the Hebrews did in ancient Egypt (Exodus 2:23). 

Protection 

But I keep under my body and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. (1 Corinthians 9:27 KJV) 

But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. (1 Corinthians 11:28 KJV) 

We must be vigilant and examine ourselves to remove sin, especially pride. This is the best way to protect ourselves from the attacks of Leviathan. Many people think of boot camp as a place you train for combat. Any veteran will tell you that basic training is about three things:

• Knowing what weapons are available 

• Learning how to use those weapons 

• Receiving orders and following them

Words rose from my soul, pleading for Him to reveal why He has remained silent when a single word from Him would mean so much to so many. For the next few hours, God used things I learned about years ago and things I had just discovered to show why He talks to some and why He doesn’t, and in demonstrative ways.
